People tend to think of the battle for Normandy in terms of the landings on June 6th. But the fighting continued until nearly the end of August, and by the peak of the engagement several million men were at combat over the 4000 square miles of Normandy countryside.

Though the invasion was a success more battles followed, some victories, some failures and various operations were planned and launched. The British and Canadians fought in the Caen area and the Americans for Cherbourg and then south for St Lô and Avranches. Then following Hitler’s counterattack at Mortain, the Germans were defeated in the so called Falaise gap where the American, Canadian, Polish, French and British forces
surrounded the remnants of the once glorious German Army in the “corridor of death”.
